Scoping templates

Last updated 11/06/2026

Project targeting

A template can target:

  • Specific projects — pick one or more.
  • Project categories — every project in the chosen Jira project categories, including ones added later.
  • Project types — software, business (work management) or service management projects.
  • All projects — everywhere, including projects created later.

Exclusions are honoured last: an excluded project never receives the template regardless of the rule that matched it.

Work item type targeting

Within matched projects, the template attaches to all types or to specific types matched by name (for example “Story”), so one choice spans projects even when their internal type ids differ.

Dynamic re-targeting

Category, project-type and all-project scopes are kept up to date automatically: when a project is created or re-categorised, matching templates appear on it without re-saving.
