Smart values (variables)

Overview

Templates can include {{...}} tokens that resolve when the template is applied. Use them in the summary, description, text fields, and child items.

Date tokens (resolve live on the Create screen)

  • {{today}} / {{now}} — today's date (DD/MM/YYYY)
  • {{now+7d}}, {{now+2w}}, {{now+1m}} — offsets in days, weeks, months (also negative)
  • A Due date field set to {{now+7d}} becomes a real date one week out.

Context tokens (resolve right after creation)

  • {{parent.key}}, {{parent.summary}} — the immediate parent
  • {{epic.key}}, {{epic.summary}} — the nearest Epic ancestor
  • {{ancestor('TypeName').key}} — nearest ancestor of a given type
  • {{self.key}} — the created work item's own key
  • {{currentUser.name}} — the creator's display name; an Assignee field set to {{currentUser}} assigns the creator
  • {{project.key}}, {{project.name}} — the project
  • Field references: {{parent.field.customfield_10010}} (by field id)

Unresolved tokens

If a token has nothing to resolve to (e.g. {{parent.key}} with no parent), it is removed and the surrounding text is tidied: “{{parent.key}} — Login” becomes “Login”.

Validation

Unknown or malformed tokens are rejected when you save the template, so typos never reach the Create screen.
